Click to expand.I dont think it is anything to do with throttling at all-if you use any kind of peer to peer software,wether it is something like bit torrent or e mule your connection will practically grind to a halt purely because of the amount of band width the p2p program is using.Obviously you can configure it to use less bandwidth but it will always slow your connection down. Also, as leaf1234 said the speed you get using bit torrent is more dependant on amount of seeders,where they are situated,etc and if you get full speeds when downloading normally then I would say your connection is fine. As far as I am aware VM were intending to use 'traffic shaping' to limit p2p downloads but I think the new 'throttling' policy has superseded it. Slow Bittorrent speeds has nothing at all to do with VM. It depends on the tracker from which you are downloading from. If it is a quality tracker with lots of high speed seeds then you will max out your connection. If it is a ****** public tracker then you will not reach high speeds.

And by the whole nature of Bittorrent, obviously your connection is going to suffer whilst downloading. If people actually learned a little bit about the programs they were using then there wouldn't be all this mis-information. When using bittorrent you are connecting to sometimes hundreds of other users. With Newsgroups you are only connecting to one. On private torrent sites I can still max out my 10mb connection every time, I can see 1.1Mb/s sometimes 1.2/1.3. However due to the fact that at 40kb/s I will have to seed for days to get a 1:1 ration I too also prefer Newsgroups.

When you download a web page your computer sends information to say i got that page, if you upload is maxed out due to bit torrent then computer will take ages to say i got that page, until it can send that bit of data then the page you are trying to access will not load ie - slow net access. Hope this helps. I don't think it's been mentioned as yet, but bittorrent can be painfully slow if you don't set it up correctly. This is mainly due to the upload/download ratio of your internet connection. Without getting too technical, you need to limit the upload connection speed of your bittorrent application.
